Who We Are

University of Nairobi, Faculty of Law, is a public law school located in Nairobi, Kenya which was founded in the 1960s.

The University of Nairobi made its maiden appearance at the Vis Moot in 2021. In every edition since, the team has been a fixture in the competition. In 2022, the team held the honour of having a student awarded a Martin Domke Honorable Mention Award for Best Individual Oralist. This year, the team comprises a formidable line-up of motivated law students, eager to make an indelible mark in the competition.

The team is excited to engage with fellow teams and arbitrators alike, in what promises to be an intellectually stimulating affair in Vienna!

Meet the Team

Anthony Arani

Arani Anthony is an LLB undergraduate at the University of Nairobi, with a strong passion for advancing ADR practices. He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Certified Professional Mediator. Arani is also pursuing a Certified Secretariat Course at Strathmore University.

He serves as the President of the Young Arbiters Society, Kenyan Branch, an organization dedicated to promoting ADR among students. Additionally, Arani is the Organizing Secretary of the Student Association for Legal Aid and Research and the Chairman of the SATIMA Law Club, a mentorship initiative aimed at empowering law students.

Arani has worked as a research assistant on various projects, showcasing his commitment to academic and practical legal excellence. Outside his professional and academic pursuits, he enjoys playing the piano at a local gallery, blending his creativity with his passion for the arts.

Faith Onsombi

Faith Onsombi is a dedicated third-year law student at the University of Nairobi, with a passion for research and advocacy. Currently serving as a researcher for the UoN Vis Moot Team, Faith is deeply immersed in honing her skills in international arbitration through this prestigious competition.

Earlier this year, Faith’s exceptional teamwork and eloquence earned her team victory in the Intervarsity Debate hosted by the Kenya Model United Nations (KMUN) 2024. This achievement not only showcased her analytical and persuasive abilities but also solidified her reputation as an emerging leader in legal discourse.

Aspiring to become an arbitrator, Faith is keen on leveraging the knowledge and practical experience gained from participating in the Vis Moot to build a strong foundation in alternative dispute resolution. She believes this platform will help her contribute meaningfully to the development of arbitration in Kenya and beyond.

Paul Kituyi

Paul is a third year student at the University of Nairobi. He is an avid mootie and has featured in children’s rights and administrative law moot court competitions.

He is also the president of the University of Nairobi Debate Society and a great enthusiast of social impact ventures.

On his free time he enjoys a good sunset and strolls with friends & family.

Vicky Wanjiru Mwangi

Vicky is a final year law student at the University of Nairobi with a strong focus on international arbitration and dispute resolution. Vicky brings a solid background in legal research, persuasive writing, and oral advocacy.

Vicky’s legal interests span International arbitration, environmental advocacy, corporate governance, and emerging fields like esports and cybersecurity. She recently co-authored an article titled Arbitration as a Dispute Resolution Method in the Cybersecurity Space in Kenya showcasing her commitment to exploring innovative applications of ADR. She looks forward to leveraging her expertise at the Vis Moot competition.

Ian Irungu

Ian Irungu is a 3rd Year Law Student at the University of Nairobi (UON). He previously studied political science and international relations at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques Paris (SciencesPo Paris).

Ian is a second-time participant in the Willem C Vis Moot Court Competition, having been part of the UoN team in the previous edition (2023-24). Previously, he had participated in the 2023 Alfred Deakin International Commercial Arbitration Moot, organized by the Deakin University. His team’s efforts garnered an Honorable Mention for Best Claimant Memorial. Ian believes that the competition was a valuable stepping stone for greater achievements in the international commercial arbitration space.

For him, the Vis Moot is an opportunity. An opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise in the subject through rigorous research, and through interactions with experts in arbitration and international sales law. It is indisputable that the Moot is the arena in which aspiring arbitration practitioners get their baptism of fire. Taking a second stab at the competition, Ian hopes to leverage his experience from the previous Vis Moot to make an indelible mark in this year’s competition. 

Part-time, Ian works as a writer for a number of online publications, as well as a video essay script-writer for creators on digital media. He dabbles in a variety of niches from military history to film and television, and constantly looks to expand his interests and hobbies.
