Who We Are
The University of Malawi Vis Moot Team proudly represents the institution at the 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, showcasing a diverse blend of talent and dedication. The team comprises Michael Mwaluka and Chisomo Thabwa, both in their fourth year of law school, who bring extensive experience, sharp analytical skills, and a passion for arbitration. Ungweru Kajani and Ronica Kuthakwanansi, both in their third year, contribute their persuasive advocacy, strong grasp of procedural law, and a flair for teamwork. Harry Chiwowza, the youngest member in his second year, adds fresh perspectives and exceptional research skills. Together, this dynamic team is prepared to tackle complex arbitration challenges and contribute to Malawi’s growing presence in the field of international arbitration.

Meet the Team
Chisomo Thabwa
Chisomo Thabwa is a fourth-year law student at the University of Malawi, pursuing an LLB degree. Her academic pursuits are driven by a strong passion for international trade law and commercial law, with a particular interest in international arbitration as a vital dispute resolution mechanism. As an experienced legal researcher, Chisomo has developed a solid foundation in international trade and commerce. Her participation in the Vis Moot represents a strategic effort to further enhance her expertise and knowledge in these areas, solidifying her position as a rising expert in the field.
Michael Mwaluka
Michael Mwaluka is a fourth-year law student at the University of Malawi, pursuing an LLB degree. With a keen interest in international commercial law and arbitration, he is committed to advancing his skills in these areas, particularly as arbitration emerges as a rapidly developing field in Malawi. Michael is passionate about contributing to this growth by honing his expertise through rigorous academic and practical experience, including his active participation in the Vis Moot.
Ronica Kuthakwanasi
Ronica Kuthakwanasi is a third-year law student at the University of Malawi with a strong passion for advocacy. She believes that taking up new opportunities is essential to her development as a future lawyer and is always eager to learn and grow in the legal field.
David Katona (Coach)
As an active ADR practitioner, David is fascinated by the power of good negotiation, driven by careful persuasion and fierce advocacy.
David is an Australian Conciliator and Mediator, conducting court annexed mediations and conciliations under statutory powers.
David came late to the law, having built up businesses in various sectors including construction, retail, hospitality and industrial design. He holds an LLB and was delighted to compete in the Vis and other moots.
David is thrilled to serve the team and looks forward to their growth in courage and precision, and to see them make the most of this one-in-a-lifetime experience.
Sobiya Ameen (Coach)
Sobiya Ameen, an adept dispute resolution lawyer, brings a wealth of expertise to her practice. In taxation, she navigates complex codes, offering clients tailored strategies for financial optimization and compliance. Her proficiency in blockchain law encompasses decentralized technologies, advising on smart contracts, digital assets, and regulatory compliance in the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrencies.
However, her central focus lies in International Commercial Arbitration, where she owns skills meeting the market standard practices with a fine touch in CISG. With a commitment to efficient dispute resolution, Sobiya provides clients with reliable legal avenues to safeguard their interests in the commercial realm, making her a versatile professional in taxation, blockchain, corporate, and commercial law.
