Who We Are
This is the inaugural participation of the University of Malawi in the Vis-Arbitration Moot. This comes at an opportune time as Malawi has just passed its first International Arbitration Act, with the long term vision of opening an international arbitration institute.
The University of Malawi has participated in several international moot competitions including the African Disability Rights Moot, The World Human Rights moot where it finished in the top 8, and the Nelson Mandela World moot competition where it was among the 16 best universities in the world.
This year's Vis Moot team comprises Michael, Martin, Prince and Lyiandra.
Meet the Team
Lyiahndra Phiri
Lyiahndra is a third year law student at the University of Malawi and she is interested in commercal law.
She also holds a Bachelor's in Communication and focused on Public Relations, from the University of Malawi.
She aspires to work for the United Nations in the near future.
Martin Theodore Chirwa
Martin is a fourth year Law student at the University of Malawi who is pursuing his Bachelor of Laws degree. He also has a first degree in Bachelor of Arts Humanities having majored in Philosophy and a minor in Music.
He intends to acquire expertise in the domain of international commercial contracts and transactions. Martin is very passionate about mooting and believes that developing advocacy skills is a fundamental to any law student who is desirous of making a significant impact in international arbitration and dispute settlement.
Michael Mwaluka
Michael is a third year law student from the University of Malawi.
He takes a great interest in commercial law and human rights law and has recently published in the students journal of the University of Malawi and Researchgate.
He is also the current President of the Gender Justice Clinic of the University of Malawi. He Aspires to be an arbitration expert in Malawi as it is a nascent and developing field in Malawi.
Prince Mwai Kathewera
Prince is an undergraduate of the University of Malawi. He is currently a third year law student under the School of Law, Economics and Government.
Prince is also an environmental justice activist and serves as a Secretary of the Environmental Justice and Sustainability Clinic under the Department of Law at the University of Malawi.
Atupele Masanjala (Coach)
Atupele Masanjala was called to the Bar in 2018 after graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from the University of Malawi.
She also holds a Master of Laws Degree in International Trade Law from the University of Cape Town.
Atupele has worked in a private law firm and at Standard Bank as a legal officer. Atupele is a lecturer at the University of Malawi and a Project Lawyer for an NGO called Women Lawyers Association.
