Who We Are
Introducing the inaugural University of Ghana Vis Moot team.
Holding the pen in front of the first page of their Vis Moot history, the University of Ghana team is excited to feature in its maiden showing in the moot, and is eager to learn from other teams and experts alike.
Drafting their Claimant and Respondent memoranda was a great learning experience for the team. The team looks forward to a wonderful time at the East Africa Pre moot and at the oral hearings in Vienna.
Meet the Team
Gifty Emmanuella Buernarki
Gifty is a 2nd year student at the University of Ghana, and an oralist for the competition.
She is very determined and believes the University of Ghana can pioneer and set a precedent for others not only within the university but in other universities in Ghana to take up a genuine interest in international commercial arbitration.
Armed with an interest in arbitration which she is currently studying, she is hopeful and excited to the many opportunities to be found by participating in the 31st VIS Moot. Gifty is willing to delve deep into research and discover for herself the extents to which she can impression in international commercial arbitration practice in Ghana.
Bernard Mwinyele
Bernard is a 3rd year student and also an oralist for the competition.
He considers himself a student of life and experience and is eager to participate in the 31st VIS Moot to broaden his scope of knowledge on international commercial arbitration.
Currently studying commercial law, he appreciates the need to uphold the substance and sanctity of contracts for the sale of goods as this is a basic transaction of all people and is necessary even more so on the international level. He is excited to apply himself in this manner to develop an even greater appreciation of this belief.
Josephine Bart-Plange
Josephine is a final year student and a lead oralist for the competition.
Her interest in commercial arbitration was stirred during her summer internship at a law firm under the auspices of a fellow of the chartered institute of arbitrators.
Josephine is excited about being a part of the University's maiden participation in the Vis moot where she intends to share not only her expertise but guide her team members in conducting targeted in depth research.
Josephine aspires to specialize in Arbitration specifically international commercial arbitration after completing her professional course. In her words, "Arbitration is a game changer".
Peggy Akasi Amadea Enyimah
Peggy is a second year student at the University of Ghana School of Law.
She is currently taking a course in arbitration, and has a keen interest in exploring international commercial arbitration one day.
With the excellent researching skills, she is ready to participate in University of Ghana's debut Vis moot.
Sadick Abubakari
Sadick is a third year student at the University of Ghana School of Law.
He is excited to be part of the University of Ghana's first appearance at the Vis Moot.
Having participated in previous moot competitions at the faculty, he has rich experience in drafting memos which is a great asset to the Vis team.
Velma Naa Adjeley
Velma is a 2nd year student and an oralist for the competition.
Having indulged in debate and public speaking previously in high school, she's eager to apply herself and develop her oral skills in hopes of being a world class orator. Velma was particularly selected by her international law lecturer to participate in the moot after exhibiting impressive research capabilities and eloquent speech.
Currently studying arbitration in class, she is excited to gain in depth knowledge into international commercial arbitration and sees it as a door way to promoting international relations.
Augustine Beliksuun (Coach)
Augustine is a lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law where he teaches various topics on Public International Law, International Trade Law, International Investment Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Conflict of Laws. He is also the coordinator of the School’s LLM/MA International Law programme.
In addition to his academic work, Augustine is the Managing Partner of Accra-based corporate law firm, FEROCITER, where he leads the firm's commercial disputes, international economic law, and maritime law teams.
He has consulted for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in various capacities since its commissioning in August 2020.
Augustine holds academic qualifications from Harvard Law School (LL.M) USA, the World Trade Institute, Switzerland (MILE 14), University of Southampton, UK (LL.M Maritime Law), and KNUST, Ghana (LL. B).
He is a member of ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.
Leonard Helbrecht (Coach)
Leonard is a 4th-year law student at the University of Freiburg and is currently doing an exchange year at Keio Law School in Tokyo, Japan.
He participated in the 30th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, where he discovered his passion for international arbitration. Leonard looks back on his participation in the Vis Moot as an intense and exciting experience, which allowed him to meet practitioners from all over the world and to make friends in every part of the globe.
He is very excited to be part of the University of Ghana Vis Moot team and to support the new generation of mooties on their way to Vienna.
Ruby Charlene Opoku (Coach)
Ruby Charlene is a final-year student at the University of Ghana School of Law, and serves as the head of the External Competitions Committee within the Law Students Union.
Engaging actively in mooting competitions since her second year, she has participated in competitions such as the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot and the University of Leiden's Children's Rights Competition.
Additionally, Ruby is the founder and Managing Partner of the on-campus student law firm called LEAD Attorneys.
Ruby is very enthusiastic about coaching the Vis Moot and contributing to the School's maiden experience in the Vis Moot Competition.
Dr. Sena Afua Dei-Tutu (Coach)
Dr. Sena Dei-Tutu is lecturer in the University of Ghana School of Law. She is an accomplished lawyer and has over twenty years of experience working on rule of law, governance and security sector issues in the West African sub region.
After completion of her education, Dr. Dei-Tutu worked with the United Nations Mission in Liberia for eight years, as the head of the Legal Education and Training Unit, where she served as a lead trainer in the Rule of Law Division of the Mission on all Justice and Rule of Law Issues. In 2015, she returned to Ghana to work as a Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law.
Between January 2019 and January 2020, Dr. Dei-Tutu worked as the Senior Rule of Law Expert with the African Union Technical Support Team to the Gambia.
She returned to the University and is back to teaching and mentoring her students.
